Aug 16 2014 as the title says the job involves making a tapered square hole in the end of a 38 round rod. distance across the flats is about 1164 leading into the hole with approx 4 degrees per side taper to about .4 deep. clearance hole for chips can go much deeper than .4 . material will probably be 303 ss or 12l14 if 303 doesn't work out.

Nov 06 2017 nearly all round work needs milling or drilling. for as much round work there is why not use a 3 or 4jaw chuck? we made an hardened alloy steel adapter block that is attached to the base of a 3-jaw chuck it's bottom side is keyed and sloted for 12-13 shcs. this fixture stays put on our mill table ready for immediate use.

The bench-top cnc cane mill was introduced in2012 and there are now 5 units in operation. as the name implies it is portable. the machine weighs only 65 with a footprint of 26 x 12 inches. a light weight aluminum carriage moves the strip thru the mill and is easily removed for storage.
The next piece i just plunged the end mill and cut the whole length. both worked just fine. i am doing this on a horizontal mill with plenty power. i used 1400 rpm for the spindle and it cut fine. these parts don't have to be really exact so i didn't use a smaller diameter end mill first.
The raw materials for a cnc milling machine aren't too difficult to procure so my goal for the final project is to build a sturdy milling machine specifically for the purpose of milling pcbs. for materials selection i will plan to build the machine primarily out of mdf with metal supports where necessary.
